Addicted to Oxygen

Ok, so my mom's on oxygen now, due to an apparently permanent medical condition, so she's got an oxygen tank and all that goes with her everywhere, and that's how it is. She's doing just fine, thank you very much for asking. And so one of her acquaintances told her to be careful cause she might get addicted to oxygen.

Really.

Like, do you know somebody who's NOT addicted to oxygen? I myself haven't met them yet.

Mom was perturbed by this; I think it's hilarious. I fell off my chair laughing when my mom told me the story. I wish I'd been there, so I could have whacked the acquaintance, sat on her, and discovered just how addicted to oxygen SHE was.

Yeah, yeah, I know; the acquaintance means the tank. She might get addicted to the oxygen tank. Even if she was on it for fun (which she isn't), I fail to see exactly how much damage she could be causing the society. It's not even going to compromise her health. Quite the opposite, in fact.

What the hell gets into people? How does it happen that a) that remark makes sense to them, and b) it comes out of their mouths?

Please feel free to mollify my mom by making fun of her idiot acquaintance in the comment section.

She's being brave and all, but I think she'd enjoy the support. It's awfully hard, being addicted to oxygen.
