Damn, I miss Albuquerque
Mom was filling me in on the news from my hometown yesterday, and I thought I'd share, for those of you who don't keep up with Albuquerque news -- especially all you guys in Turkey; I bet you missed all this, for instance.
First, as we all know, around Christmas the incidence of domestic violence goes WAY up, cause we're all thinking a lot about love and charity and mercy, and so we get testy and annoyed cause we're not getting enough (ah, the Human Condition!), so we whack each other. And this was going on in Albuquerque, too, where over the holidays a couple came to blows -- knives were involved, indeed -- over the proper preparation of the holiday pizza; one of them had failed to take the skin off the green chile.
So there was that. Everybody, be careful about your green chile at this time of year.
But the big news concerned the luminarias.
As part of the city's 300th anniversary, the citizens attempted to set a Guinness world record for luminarias, those lovely New Mexican Christmas lights which the rest of the country has taken up lately, but which really need southwestern architecture to look their best.
They were hoping for 3 million luminarias -- they figure they got 6 million.
So they sent off the documentation, and the world record mavens sent it back, cause there's no category for luminarias.
So. One could think of this as MONTHS of organization and planning and well-orchestrated civic activity wasted, or, one could do what they'll probably do in Albuquerque, if I know Albuquerque, which I do, very well, and that is tell the story for the next 300 years, laughing every time.
Happy Holidays! Remember, always, to peel the green chile before you put it on the pizza. And remember also to check to see if your category exists, BEFORE you try to set your world record.
