The Child's Agreement

I asked the child what it was he wanted to sign (see earlier entry, if you're lost), and he said he wanted to sign things, too, because he wanted to be part of the aventure.

I said, well, ok, the lawyers and the realtors aren't going to be interested in your signature, so sorry, but we are; I can write up something for you to sign, no problem, what do you want it to say?

He thought about it (while he was watching cartoons) and later told me he wanted to sign an agreement that he chose to be part of the move to Bear's Retreat and that his parents weren't forcing him to do it.

Ok! No prob.

Here's the agreement, which you may use, if you like, should you require something like it. As with the contract invented by the dad in Red Sky at Morning (a book I adore, which the child and I recently read, though I had to leave out some of the spicier parts), it's not legally binding. But that's beside the point.

AGREEMENT TO MOVE INTO BEAR'S RETREAT

KNOW ALL PERSONS BY THESE PRESENTS:

That I, ______________, child of_______________ and _________________, parents, do hereby agree to participate in the proposed move to the property known to the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation as "Bear's Retreat," located at _____________, in the Borough of Pleasant Hills, south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the city wherein the said child, __________________, was born.

BE IT ALSO KNOWN that not only do I, _______________, agree to move to "Bear's Retreat," should all plans now in the offing turn out well and the transaction between my parents, the current owner of "Bear's Retreat," the realtors, the bank, and that lawyer my mother met on Friday actually transact, but also I, the child _______________, do hereby state and affirm that I undertake to move with my family from our current location to the said property, "Bear's Retreat," of my own free will and by my own choice, and that my parents, the said ______________________and ________________, are not making me do it, though I am well aware, being of sound mind and body even if I am only eight years old, that they could very well make me do it if they wanted, but they aren't, since I, the child ________________, have agreed to the said move, as stated above.

AND FURTHERMORE in case it should arise, I, the child ________________, do hereby state and affirm that although I am aware of various difficulties and troublesome issues inherent in the proposed move, including but not limited to: the packing up of some of my belongings; the allocation of other of my belongings to a garage sale; the leaving of the house that I grew up in, with which I am very familiar, unlike the said property "Bear's Retreat," which I have seen only fleetingly and from outside; the leaving of good friends in the neighborhood; and my worry concerning the stress that this is going to put on the cats; NEVERTHELESS I am well aware of various attractions offered by the said property "Bear's Retreat," including but not limited to: the humongous room which will become my bedroom, which, I have been told, is big enough for that air hockey table my Dad and I have had our eyes on; numerous interesting historical details of the house, such as that carving of a hand pointing to something which might well be some kind of buried treasure; two acres of woodland to play on; two ruined structures in the front yard which appear to offer good camping-out possibilities, and various interesting inhabitants of the property who are, to the best of my knowledge, staying with us, including but not limited to: deer, raccoons, groundhogs, rabbits, dryads, sylphs, flower fairies, and what appears to be the Parliament of the Sidhe; and THEREFORE not only do I, the child _____________, agree to move of my own free will and by my choice, but I also agree not to go down to the Foster Child Services and demand to be placed elsewhere, but agree to stay with my parents, the aforementioned __________________and _____________, because, really, though this is all a big ol' pain, it's pretty cool.
