Flood Update: Knitting Saved By Valiant Victorianist

What happened to Pittsburgh on Friday, in case you missed it (as for instance if you were paying closer attention to regions that were more strongly affected by the weather), is that the remnants of Hurricane Ivan roared northwards, and then, when they got to Pittsburgh, ran into some stalled cold front, and the two pieces of weather -- they were cousins -- sat around and talked for a while -- all day, in fact -- and so Pittsburgh acquired more rain in a 24 hour period than it had before, ever in recorded history.

As it happens, the near 6" we got broke the record which had been established about 9 days before, when the remnants of Hurricane Frances came to visit, but finding no cousins, didn't stick around to chat. Precis of problem: 1) it's hilly, so all the water runs into low places, and 2) we've had too much rain for months, so the ground was saturated. Floods, therefore.

I myself spent most of the day in College Hall. I had a meeting in the morning that took me off to the residence halls, and it was raining, and then the rest of the day I was working in my office, where I did indeed observe the rain, which was substantial, and then I had another meeting, and then I heard a paper, and then I went downstairs to wait for Sam, who was going to pick me up for the anniversary dinner, and he didn't show up.

And he didn't show up, and he didn't show up.

And then after that he didn't show up some more.

And I couldn't get through to anybody on the cell phone.

This had me sort of worried (I am, as I have mentioned before, a Death-And-Destruction sort of girl), and I worried till somebody passing by told me that all the roads were flooded and everything was gridlocked and the city was in a state of emergency.

So I felt much better, cause if the city was in a state of emergency then Sam hadn't been singled out to be dead in some Freak Accident, and I went upstairs and finally got hold of him on the Regular Phone, at which point I heard that water was coming in our basement but Sam had been valiantly wielding the wet/dry vaccuum, and had also Saved the Knitting.

We got off easy, we did. The basement is drying out. And I was indeed stuck in the city, since no kidding all the roads all of them were flooded at one point or another, but I had a good friend on the South Side so I had a dry warm place to stay with tea and companionship. And the water was only out for one day. And, as I mentioned the knitting was saved.

Turns out there was quite a lot of knitting. I sort of knew this, but not really. Sam says he was a bit startled to see how much there was of it.

Yes. Well, that's what happens to stash. You keep getting more of it. Must go knit some now.

But all we got was inconvenienced. We were very lucky.
