Gang Tramps

Ok, y'all -- here's the last knitting picture for about a month -- "Queen Anne's Lace," with the first major pattern repeat almost done:

I'm leaving it home -- too many balls of yarn to drag around with in fair isle. I'll be knitting on "Margaret Tudor," in my spare time. But no pictures, cause Sam, the photographer, won't be there. Alas. I will, however, diligently report on my knitting progress, as I know you care. Highly.

Also, for those of you who are interested in these matters, I'm packing the knitting through, rather than carrying it on. All that waiting time will provide a chance to get well started on the Proust project that Amber hooked me into.

My office isn't in any way pulled together, not at all, because the furniture didn't fit the plan I so carefully made -- and measured for, too. (I think this goes far towards explaining such major gauge problems as this). So the furniture is getting moved on Monday. When I won't be there. And the boxes of books are being stored. And when I come back in late July I'll have a couple of days to get things in order before leaving again. I'm just not thinking about it.

So far this morning I've made scones for Sam, and peanut butter cookies for the child.

After I finish talking to you I will start packing. Oh. I should get dressed. That'd be a good idea.

While I'm gone, you might want to check out the latest dreadfulness over at James Lileks' -- a new entry in Stagworld -- For Men Only from September, 1963; Lileks helpfully reproduces choice illustrations and explains them:

The Book Bonus, GANG TRAMP, appeals to men who are cooling their heels at the train station, looking for reading material that might involve, you know, gang tramps. Note the tagline: "she had a come-on trick no man could resist." I'm sorry, but a gang tramp doesn't need a come-on trick. She's a gang tramp, for heaven's sake. And a trick no man could resist? As if gang tramps travel in circles composed of upright abstemious men who would have remained faithful and chaste if it wasn't for THAT DARN GANG TRAMP and her irresistible trick.

Well. But I find that I'm still not sure exactly what a Gang Tramp is. Oh, I know what she DOES -- that's not my problem here -- I'm just not sure of the identity category. Is she part of a gang of tramps? Or does she work alone, sort of like a solitary camp follower, chasing gangs around? I think the former. I think there were hordes of these gang tramps in the early 60's, hanging out together, and, as Lileks says, waiting for upright highly moral men to walk by, so as to practice their come-on tricks.

It was hard times. I blame the Mock Duck.
