Pittsburgh Blogs

Pretty much immediately after she was added onto my Pittsburgh Blogroll, Meredith asked, in the comment section, what my criteria for listing a blog in the Pittsburgh Blogroll are. (I do not know if she means for me to think twice about adding hers in.)

My first thought was -- well. Meredith. They're in Pittsburgh.

But that doesn't really cover it. First of all, the other blogrolls have underlying criteria that are probably clearer. I don't link to All Textile Blogs I Find. I link to the ones I either read regularly, or would read regularly if I had time. Same with the Text Blogroll. I like the writing in those blogs, or I'm interested in the lives portrayed in them, or they're focused on something I care about.

But if I find a blog coming out of Pittsburgh, I put it on my Pittsburgh Blogroll, even if I'm not reading it regularly. As long as it's really a blog. And it's more or less active. And it's at least semi-literate. And it's not spending its little life attempting to be egregiously offensive (since I'm linking directly to it).

So, as Meredith points out, the list looks randomly chosen.

I love that, really. Pittsburgh blogs. All OVER the place. We've got blogs that focus on Pittsburgh culture.. We've got blogs that focus on performing in Pittsburgh, or working backstage in Pittsburgh whilst thinking about politics. We've got blogs that focus on doctoring in Pittsburgh. We've got blogs written by professional journalists, such as this one. Also, this. We've got blogs written by professors who aren't me. We've got photographers. Oh, wait, here's another one. If we'd like to find out about daily life in Pittsburgh, we can read about the busy life of a working Catholic mom, the busy life of a young politically-minded single lesbian, or the busy life of a cancer researcher who just bought a new house. Hell, there's even a Knitting Blogger who's not me.*

All over the place. Love it.

The blogroll's getting pretty long, though, so soon I'll have to host it on a separate page. Which is a Pain, with Blogger, which is why I haven't done it yet. And at that point, I'll keep the whole Pittsburgh list, but add the ones I read regularly into my Text Blogroll.

I actually have a plan, here. Someday we're going to have enough Pittsburgh Blogs to reach critical mass, and we're going to collect ourselves into a Pittsburgh Blog Map, just as New-York** City has already done. And when we do, I'll have The List. "Here!" I'll say. "Here's The List! I kept it for you all these years! For I knew! I knew that someday you would arrive, Little Grasshopper, and you would organize the bloggers on the list! Yes! Which I couldn't do on account of I had to get that damn book manuscript out, and if my boss found out I was doing this instead, I'd be Dead Meat! Hey! And let's have a party, too! Let's rent a hall dahntahn and invite all the bloggers! I'll bake a cake!"

And then I'll fall over dead, in a pile of dust.

Just remember. You want to say, when you finally get here, "whom does the grail serve?" Do NOT forget that important part, or we're DOOMED.

*now, you KNOW there was not room to mention ALL y'all, so do not feel slighted if you're not mentioned above. Look! You're in the blogroll! If not, email me! Let me know! I'll put you on The List! Probably!
