Maundy Thursday
The hot cross buns are NOT rising as quickly as they ought. Or, at least, as quickly as I think they ought. They're so rich, though. Maybe that's it. The yeast is fine. That's not it.
Amber asked if Maundy Thursday is when we slam the books and the lights go out. For us, no, that's tonight, at Tenebrae, though it can be done for Maundy Thursday. We (the choir, that is) love that part. We just love it. There will be 7 readings, and lovely meaningful songs after each one, and the lights going out bit by bit throughout the church, and then at the end of the seventh reading, the rest of the lights go out and the choir creates Thunder (by banging old books on the wooden pieces of the choir loft), and the choir director creates Loud Discord (by banging on the organ), and then we all stop suddenly at once, and the whole church sits in silence for a full minute.
Which, if you're used to meditating, is not long, but if you're one of the regular humans, lasts FOREVER.
Then the choir sings something -- tonight it's the lovely "How Can I Keep From Singing?" (watch out! music on the link!) and we have a homily.
Oh, yeah. Majorly excellent ritual.
I seem to have spent the entire morning reading blogs, but that's probably because I'm still not well. So I think I'm knitting, but I'm not knitting. I'm reading email. I think I'm baking, but this might not be true. I'm getting things done, I think, but it's all disconnected and far, far away.
Must go check on hot cross buns now...
Oh, wait, new mail...
